WORKSTATION IN A CHARITY ORGANIZATION

Autumn 2018

Team : 3 students

In collaboration with the team of volunteers of the Restos du cœur de Montbéliard, route d'Audincourt

Project presented at the 26th Symposium of Design and Innovation Sciences, CONFERE 2019, Galway, Ireland

Ergonomical redesign of the food sorting workstation at the Restos du cœur, Montbéliard

Context

"Les Restaurants du Cœur" is a national non-profit association whose main goal is to distribute food to the needy French people. In Montbéliard, the RoC centre needed to improve its sorting area. Food is sorted by category and checked for cleanliness or expiry date. This area presented problems in spatial and human organization, work gestures and postures, and handling.

The methodology used in the framework of the workstation improvement project is based on the methodology proposed and teached by Sagot (SAGOT J-C., Pour améliorer simultanément moyens de production et conditions de travail, La Technique Moderne, N°6-7, p7-12, 1996).

Ergonomic diagnosis of the station

The following workstations were first identified:

  1. Unloading and storage

  2. Pre-sorting

  3. Weighing

  4. Fine sorting

  5. Cleaning

  6. Storage

By studying the expected work activity at the diving station, we used tools to correctly and objectively define the various ergonomic problems raised by this position, whether physical (awkward postures, injuries, etc.) or cognitive (stress, mental workload, etc.).
The Grafcets of tasks to analyze the operator's activity and identify potential organizational problems.

For each of the positions, the APACT (2000) evaluation grid was used. This grid thus qualifies "risk parameters", the parameters having obtained a score of less than 6.5 on a scale of 10.

The parameters emerging from this study are:

  • the efforts

  • the postures

  • the handling

  • the organization of flows.

Extensive ergonomic study

The objective of the in-depth ergonomic study is to study in more detail the parameters that emerged as priorities for the previous diagnosis. The standards used make it possible to target the origin of potential MSD hazards, making it possible to outline a suitable future activity or activities on the positions studied.

Then we studied the postures in certain tasks of the position, the efforts made, and the handling exercised thanks to the standards:

  • AFNOR: Compilation of French ergonomic standards

  • RULA : A survey method for the investigation of work-related upper limb disorders, Applied Ergonomics

  • NIOSH: Maximum allowable load of load lift

In order to allow a collaborative redesign and to promote the acceptability of workstation modifications by the volunteers of the Restos du Coeur de Montbéliard, an expression and voting space has been set up regarding the solutions to be brought.

The final concepts were validated by the volunteers using a virtual reality platform: the CAVE of the ERCOS research team.
During the immersion activity, the user had the opportunity to immerse himself in several solutions, to appropriate them and make feedback.
